Prior to COVID-19, I attended a retreat that focused on reframing thoughts, feelings, and past experiences and turning negatives into positives. What we are collectively experiencing is difficult and painful. I have found myself using some of these reframing skills during our current coronavirus pandemic experience.
Look to the Positive During Coronavirus Uncertainty
These are some of the things I am concentrating on appreciating:
- I have both of my adult kids home which rarely happens.
- We are healthy.
- It is my favorite season in New England, spring. It’s a beautiful time to be outdoors.
- I have been able to connect with friends and family by phone and other digital methods.
- I can help others.
- We are doing a puzzle — one of my favorite pastimes.
- My kids are indulging me by joining me in watching my favorite show, I Love Lucy.
- I am getting to eat candy, raising my dopamine levels and not feeling guilty about it.
- I have time to reflect.
- The smiles from the people I pass on walks.
- My dog is very happy to have us all home.
- The brave people on the frontlines risking their lives to help others.
- When kids walk by and admire the huge teddy bear sitting in my window.
- The sidewalk chalk I bought so that we can decorate our driveway.
- The people in my life that are in recovery and making it through substance-free.
- The delicious meals made possible by my InstaPot.
- Mitigation seems to be working.
- The N95 mask I was given for work.
- My dishwasher that doesn’t know what hit it.
The list could go on and on. Try reframing your thoughts and making your own list.
For those in recovery, keep up the good work. This is a true test and you are doing it!
